Mental Menopause

we can’t hide
in purple skies
anymore

haven’t you heard?
that true love's lost
forever

oh god
i knew this day would dawn…
doctor bills, baby sitters, mortgage,
insurance, and cars
have an ulcer at thirty
and give up the bars
everyone’s tugging at my sleeve
where can i run?
who should i follow?

got a good job
built a two story home
with kids in the mall
and wife on the phone
“remember those crazy parties,
rollercoaster rides,
living on the bottom
i’ll never get that high
again"

a figure approaches
from the shadows
his face becomes clear
with the years
mine’s withered
and road mapped
with no destination
